A new version of PCIe (2.0)

January 18th, 2007 by monk

PCIe 2.0 has now been released. PCIe can transfer data at 2.5Gbps, but PCIe 2.0 will transfer data at 5Gbps. That will double the transfer rate and start a new era of Video Cards.

The PCI Express Cable specification will let PCI devices be connected not just with plug-in slots but also with standardized copper cables as long as 10 meters with data transfer speeds of 2.5Gbps per line.

Could this, then, be used to replace USB *and* FireWire for external drives, etc? That’s blazing fast for copper.
